Highlights of NASS Open Week 2026 (Photos)

The National Assembly (NASS) Open Week 2026 took place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja between Tuesday, 14th andThursday, 16th July, 2026. Centered on evaluating the scorecard and reform agenda of the 10th National Assembly, the initiative was championed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, in partnership with National Assembly Library, headed by Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba.

Key Highlights & Strategic Dialogues

1. Theme & Core Objective

Theme: “Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform.”
Objective: Provide a public platform for citizens, civil society, policymakers, and development partners to engage directly with the legislative process, review parliamentary achievements, and strengthen institutional trust.

2. National Assembly Library Strategic Sessions

The event coincided with the 2nd anniversary of the National Assembly Library. Hosted under the leadership of the Executive Secretary, Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, the library organized three main national roundtables:

Oversight and Delivery Exchange (“How Oversight Delivers Results”): Examined practical mechanisms for using legislative oversight to drive public sector accountability and measure real policy outcomes.

National Security Roundtable (“Towards a Safer Nigeria”): Brought together lawmakers, security heads, traditional rulers, and policy experts to address national security challenges and outline legislative interventions.

Legislative Business Breakfast (“Driving Reform Through…”): Focused on private-sector collaboration, policy environment reforms, and economic growth legislation.

3. Legislative Digital Milestones Unveiled

The National Assembly Library presented its major expansion and digital transformation footprint:

8,584 legislative materials digitized (including over 4,400 Votes & Proceedings).
Over 1 million weekly web visitors and a social media reach exceeding 1.5 million citizens.
535,000+ physical visitors hosted since its commissioning.

4. Push for Gender Inclusion & Constitutional Reforms

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs used the platform to advocate strongly for the passage of the Women’s Special Seats Bill.
The proposal seeks to create temporary special legislative seats (12 in the Senate, 37 in the House of Representatives, and 108 across State Houses of Assembly) under a 16-year sunset clause to correct systemic female underrepresentation in political leadership.

5. Youth Townhall

Direct Citizen Engagement: Created a dedicated interactive session between young Nigerians, youth leaders, and legislators.
Focus Areas: Addressed critical issues including youth participation in governance, job creation, digital skills development, and legislative support for entrepreneurship and innovation.

At the closing ceremony, Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, was given an Institutional Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions to the successful hosting of the National Assembly Open Week 2026.
