On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Senate considered and adopted a motion on the successful rescue of abducted school children and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State.
The motion, moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidle, was keenly debated and unanimously adopted.
In the summation of the debate on the motion, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin noted that President Tinubu has demonstrated immense resolve and commitment in the fight against all forms of violent crimes over time, and our armed forces have done commendably well in pushing back insurgency, banditry and kidnapping.
Furthermore, Senator Jibrin reiterated that insecurity has international dimensions and our internal security is being affected by the prevailing insecurity in the Sahel region and conflicts in other parts of the world.
However, our government has been doing an excellent job of containing the situation, and the Senate will provide all necessary support to ensure the security of lives and property for all citizens.
The Senate acknowledged that the successful rescue operation reflects the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government to defeating criminality and, among other resolutions, commended the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his decisive leadership in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
The senate also commended the armed forces for their exceptional professionalism, courage and patriotism and condoled the families of all fallen service personnel and teachers while calling for the prompt payment of all statutory benefits due to the families of fallen heroes.
In addition, three bills scaled first reading while one bill, the Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Medical Centres Act to Establish the Federal Medical Centre, Argungu, Kebbi State, 2026, was passed for second reading.
