Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on northern youths to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, describing the policies as critical “surgical procedures” required to rescue and stabilize the nation’s economy.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Northern Ethnic Groups Assembly in Abuja, the Senate President stressed that crucial policies such as the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market were essential steps to dismantle long standing structural bottlenecks and unlock Nigeria’s economic potential.
“The reforms initiated by President Tinubu are concrete, courageous actions,” Akpabio said. “While these measures initially posed challenges, they were the surgical procedures needed to redirect resources into healthcare, education, and infrastructure.”
Akpabio noted that the administration’s strategy is already yielding positive results, citing improved revenue collection, heightened investor confidence, and renewed interest from international development partners.
Addressing the role of youth in nation-building, the Senate President urged young Nigerians to actively engage in governance rather than waiting for the future.
“You are architects of today, not just leaders of tomorrow,” Akpabio stated, reinforcing the 10th National Assembly’s commitment to legislative reforms that enhance transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
In his remarks, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, spokesperson for the Northern Ethnic Groups Assembly, commended Akpabio for bridging regional divides and promoting national cohesion.
“His proactive engagement has rebuilt vital bridges of trust. He has proven that true national leadership transcends ethnic and geographical boundaries,” Dan-Musa said. “No regional sentiment can take precedence over the sovereignty and peace of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Dan-Musa outlined three strategic focus areas for the assembly heading into 2027: continuous engagement with northern youth structures, grassroots education on federal fiscal policies, and a firm commitment to national unity.
