Nigeria’s Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reiterated the country’s commitment to deepening diplomatic, legislative and economic ties with the United Kingdom, highlighting key areas for strategic partnership between both nations.
Senator Akpabio made the call during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Vowles, at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

During the bilateral discussion, the Senate President underscored the historic bond shared by Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting that the relationship offers extensive room for growth in democratic governance and economic expansion.
“Nigeria and the United Kingdom share a longstanding relationship built on history, mutual respect and cooperation,” Akpabio stated, emphasizing the need to channel these ties into tangible outcomes for citizens of both countries.
A central focus of the meeting was the enhancement of parliamentary collaboration. Senator Akpabio advocated for structured legislative exchanges and institutional partnerships connecting Nigerian lawmakers with their counterparts in the British House of Commons and House of Lords. He noted that sharing parliamentary experiences and best practices remains essential to refining legislative processes and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Reflecting on recent diplomatic engagements, the Senate President highlighted the strong bilateral relationship demonstrated during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom, noting the warm reception granted to the Nigerian delegation by His Majesty King Charles III.
Addressing economic matters, Senator Akpabio urged the British government and corporate entities to step up investment in Nigeria’s key resource sectors, specifically targeting oil, gas, and mining. He assured the envoy that the economic reforms implemented under the current administration have established a favorable environment for investors seeking long-term, sustainable returns.

In response, High Commissioner Vowles reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to reinforcing its partnership with Nigeria and supporting the institutional development of the National Assembly.
Senator Akpabio expressed optimism about the future of the alliance, emphasizing that bilateral relations must continuously evolve into stronger institutional frameworks and expanded economic opportunities that deliver lasting benefits to both nations.
