Senate Demands Probe into Benue Killings, Urges Security Chiefs to Deploy Early-Warning Systems

The Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu and heads of national security agencies to urgently investigate the brutal killings of 113 individuals including six Mobile Police officers, across the Benue North-East Senatorial District.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende (APC, Benue North-East), highlighting recurring armed attacks that have devastated communities across Ukum, Katsina-Ala, and Logo Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Presenting the motion, Senator Udende detailed four separate violent assaults across the constituency, culminating in significant loss of life, mass displacement, and severe disruption to local farming and economic activities:

  • Katsina-Ala LGA (Sai): 24 persons killed
  • Ukum LGA (Bom and Aboajio villages): 63 persons killed
  • Logo LGA (Ayilamo): 15 persons killed, including six Mobile Police personnel
  • Ukum LGA (Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages): 11 persons killed during an attack on October 8, 2026

Condemning the violence in strong terms, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the Nigeria Police Force.

To prevent further bloodshed, the Senate called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, and intelligence chiefs to immediately bolster joint security operations in Benue North-East, institute robust early-warning mechanisms, and establish rapid-response units to shield vulnerable farming communities.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio highlighted the alarming escalation marked by attacks on armed security personnel:

If military personnel and other armed security officers are killed in these attacks, what happens to communities that have no means of defending themselves? We must bring this matter to the attention of the Service Chiefs so that they can take appropriate action to strengthen security in the affected areas.

Senator Godswill Akpabio.
