Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that every Nigerian deserves to feel safe at home, at work and on the road, following a major breakthrough in the country’s legislative history.
The Senate President made the statement as the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police Services passed a critical hurdle, receiving formal approval from 28 State Houses of Assembly across the federation, surpassing the mandatory 24-state threshold required for constitutional alteration.
With the required concurrence secured, Senator Akpabio confirmed that the National Assembly is currently completing the necessary administrative processes to transmit the historic bill to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for presidential assent.
Commending lawmakers across both federal and state legislative bodies for their dedication to national security reform, Senator Akpabio emphasized that decentralizing police operations is essential to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
According to the Senate President, the overarching objective of the reform is to establish a security system that responds directly and effectively to local realities, protects every citizen and strictly upholds the rule of law. He stressed that accountability, professionalism, and unyielding respect for human rights must remain central to the implementation of state policing.
Senator Akpabio reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to translating this milestone legislative progress into tangible security outcomes, safer communities and peace of mind for citizens nationwide.
