Strengthening Nigeria’s Mining Sector: HB. 2362 for Geosciences Institute Advances in House

A significant legislative proposal, “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Institute of Mining and Geosciences, Gusau, Zamfara State” (HB. 2362), is advancing in the Nigerian House of Representatives. Sponsored by Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi and Hon. Kabiru Ahmadu, the bill aims to create a specialized institute dedicated to mining and geosciences education. Bill progress: Committee stage.

The primary objective of HB. 2362 is to establish an institute in Gusau, focused on providing courses, training, and research in the exploration and exploitation of minerals—ensuring national development. The institute will offer:

  • Courses of Instruction: Academic and vocational programs designed to educate students in various aspects of mining and geosciences.
  • Training: Practical skills and technical expertise to prepare students for careers in the mining sector.
  • Research: Initiatives aimed at innovating and advancing the solid mineral sector in Nigeria.

This initiative is part of a broader legislative effort to strengthen Nigeria’s mining sector and reduce the country’s reliance on oil by diversifying the economy. Establishing the institute is seen as a critical step toward creating a skilled workforce capable of sustainably utilizing the nation’s mineral resources.

HB. 2362 is not an isolated effort. Several other similar bills have been introduced in the National Assembly, also spearheaded by Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi. These include proposals for Federal Institutes of Mining and Geosciences in Takum (Taraba State), Akampkpa (Cross River State), and Ikoro (Ekiti State), reflecting a concerted push to decentralize and enhance specialized education in the solid minerals sector across Nigeria.

Furthermore, a separate bill to establish a Federal University of Mining and Geosciences in Jos, Plateau State, has already passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives and is now awaiting presidential assent. This illustrates a significant legislative drive to foster development within Nigeria’s mining and geosciences industries.

As discussions move forward, the potential establishment of the Federal Institute of Mining and Geosciences in Gusau represents a promising step toward educational advancement and economic diversification in Nigeria.
