Stakeholders Engagement at House of Reps National Public Hearing on Constitution Review

Stakeholders, on Monday, September 22, 2025, came out en masse to participate at national public hearing on the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution which held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

The hearing marks a major step in the ongoing efforts to amend the constitution especially on issues power devolution, state police, special legislative seats for women, electoral and judicial reforms, among others captured in the 87 amendment bills under consideration.

Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who is the chair, the Special Ad-hoc Committee on the Constitution Review, presided over the event said the public hearing was to ensure that the 10th Assembly gives Nigerians a constitution that truly reflects the wishes of the citizens.

The hearing had in attendance, Speaker of House of Reps, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas; the Secretary to the Government of Federation, George Akume who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, who represented Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, the Executive Secretary, National Assembly Library Trust Fund; Traditional Rulers from across the country led by the Sultan of Sokoto and Ooni of Ife, representatives from the civil societies, labour unions, NGOs, professional bodies, etc.

The national public public hearing is a consolidation of citizens’ inputs gathered during the zonal consultations held in July across the six geopolitical zones which featured public hearings at 12 designated centres nationwide.

Several groups, including women and youth groups, summitted their contributions, resolutions and memoranda of understanding at the event to the Deputy Speaker Kalu.
