The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has been honored with the Times Heroes Lawmaker of the Year Award (House of Representatives) at the Daily Times Nigeria Centenary Celebration held in Abuja.
The centenary event celebrated a hundred years of Daily Times Nigeria’s presence in media, gathering prominent national figures and institutions recognized for their ongoing contributions to the country’s development.
Reflecting on the honor, Kalu characterized the recognition as a motivation to deepen his commitment to legislative service and public duty.
“Some moments mark achievement; others remind us that the work of service is yet unfinished,” Kalu stated. “I receive it not only as an honour, but also as a call to continue serving with renewed strength, and advancing legislation that delivers meaningful impact for the people and our nation, Nigeria.”
During the ceremony, the Deputy Speaker commended the management and staff of Daily Times for a century of editorial work and national reporting. He acknowledged the publication’s legacy as a chronicler of Nigeria’s history and a key platform for national discourse since its establishment.
Highlighting the importance of independent journalism, Kalu reaffirmed the 10th House of Representatives’ commitment to supporting press freedom. He noted that the House remains focused on reviewing existing laws and practices to ensure journalists can perform their duties effectively and without undue constraints.
The award presentation concluded with Kalu expressing his gratitude to the organizers and reiterating the National Assembly’s ongoing dedication to impactful governance and press partnership.
