Enhancing Environmental Sustainability Policy in Nigeria: Bridging Implementation Gaps for Sustainable Development.

Environmental Sustainability is key to allow for human development without compromising natural resources. Man’s overdependence on the environment in the pursuit of economic growth has continued to degrade it. This degradation calls for proper resource management through regulations so that a balance is maintained. Yet the state of the environment is difficult to compare across countries because of highly diverse local conditions. The goal of environmental sustainability is to minimize environmental degradation and to halt and reverse the processes they lead to. One of today’s environmental challenges is to find ways to strengthen the scientific and socio-economic perspective to help authorities make decisions and produce sustainable development strategies with a vision for future. Nigeria faces significant environmental challenges, including plastic pollution, deforestation, and inadequate waste management, which threaten sustainable development. Despite the establishment of environmental policies, implementation gaps persist due to weak institutional frameworks, limited public participation, and insufficient enforcement mechanisms. This paper examines the current state of environmental sustainability policies in Nigeria, identifies existing challenges, and proposes strategic enhancements to promote effective environmental governance and sustainable development.
