House of Representatives Vows Continued Legislative Support to Defeat Terrorists and Bandits

The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to providing the Nigerian Armed Forces with the necessary legislative backing and resources required to eradicate terrorism and banditry across the federation.

Speaking on behalf of the Green Chamber, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Hon. Philip Agbese, emphasized that the 10th Assembly remains a steadfast partner to the military in its mission to restore national security. He noted that the legislature’s support would focus on three critical pillars: robust funding, strategic oversight, and enhanced personnel welfare.

Agbese’s remarks come at a time of heightened security operations in the North-East and North-West. He highlighted that lawmakers are prioritizing the timely release of funds to ensure troops are equipped with modern technology and critical defense assets.

“The National Assembly will stand firmly with our armed forces to defeat the elements threatening the peace and unity of our country,” Agbese stated. He added that the House is working to bridge the gap between defense requirements and available resources through more efficient budgetary provisions.

Beyond funding, the spokesperson noted that the House is intensifying its oversight functions to ensure transparency in defense spending. By ensuring that every naira allocated to the security sector is effectively utilized, the legislature aims to boost the operational readiness of the military.

The House also used the opportunity to call on Nigerian citizens to play an active role in the war against insurgency. Agbese urged the public to support the military with credible intelligence, stressing that a “whole-of-society” approach is essential to defeating asymmetric threats like banditry and kidnapping.

“The battle against terrorism is not for the military alone,” the statement concluded. “It requires the cooperation of all Nigerians. Citizens must remain vigilant and support our patriots on the frontlines with useful information.”

The House further pledged to continue reviewing existing laws to close any loopholes that hinder the prosecution of suspected terrorists and their sponsors.
