House Plenary Highlights Thursday, October 15, 2026

At the plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the House of Representatives considered vital legislative business addressing public safety, institutional reform, electoral justice, and the protection of vulnerable citizens.

The House formally received three landmark bills transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu:

  • National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Bill, 2026
  • Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) Bill, 2026
  • National School of Government Bill, 2026

These executive bills aim to overhaul drug enforcement strategies, enhance transport safety investigations, and deepen leadership development within the public sector.

In line with its oversight mandate, the House accepted a petition alleging illegal extortion activities at a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp involving the Institute of Loan and Risk Management of Nigeria, referring the matter for legislative investigation.

Addressing pressing national concerns, the House moved on two critical issues of urgent importance:

The House called for aggressive interventions to eliminate child marriage, protect young girls’ rights, and guarantee access to education and healthcare, mandating relevant committees to propose immediate legislative and budgetary frameworks.

In response to the tragic violence between the Umu Oba Anam and Aguleri communities, which reportedly claimed five lives and destroyed property, the House demanded swift peacebuilding interventions and humanitarian reconstruction support.

The House urged electricity generating companies, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to immediately upgrade infrastructure and expand grid access for energy-producing host communities.

Following binding judgments from the Federal High Court, the House called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore the Njiriv and Yonov constituencies in Benue State and conduct elections without delay.

Additionally, ten new Bills passed First Reading, including the Nigeria Community Corrections, Probation and Parole(HB.2829) and Public Asset Commission(HB.2830) by Hon. Ademorin Kuye, Insurance Regulation Commission(SB.394) and University of Technology Ondo State(SB.289)-Senate, State Security Service Pension Act(2831) by Hon. Hussaini Jallo, Federal College of Education Act(HB.2822) by Tajudeen Abbas. Reports were also laid for the establishment of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre as well as the Strategic Intelligence Management Institute.

Demonstrating its commitment to social justice and human rights, the House passed six major Bills sponsored by Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, key among them are amendments to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act(HB.2450) and measures bolstering the investigative powers of the National Human Rights Commission (HB. 2376) alongside sustained funding for human rights initiatives.

Plenary proceedings were adjourned to reconvene on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
