National Assembly Mourns as Veteran Legislator Muhammad Hassan Passes at 66

The House of Representatives has announced the passing of Hon. Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, the lawmaker representing the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State. Hassan died on Friday evening in Abuja following a period of illness. He was 66.

In a statement released on Saturday, House Spokesperson Akin Rotimi Jr. described the lawmaker’s death as a “profound loss” to the Green Chamber and the nation.

Until his passing, Hassan served as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary. A member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), he was elected to the 10th Assembly in 2023, though he was widely regarded as a veteran of the National Assembly long before holding elective office.

The House paid tribute to Hassan as one of Nigeria’s “foremost legislative counsel and legal draftsmen.” Before entering partisan politics, he spent decades within the National Assembly bureaucracy, rising through the administrative ranks to retire as a Permanent Secretary.

“Many of the laws enacted over the past decades bear his enduring imprint,” the statement noted, highlighting how his deep institutional memory and administrative expertise enriched the country’s constitutional processes.

In addition to his leadership role in the Judiciary Committee, Hassan was an active member of several key panels, including:

  • Public Petitions
  • Aviation
  • Solid Minerals
  • Constitution Review
  • Treaties, Protocols, and Agreements

Colleagues described him as a “diligent and reflective” legislator known for his professionalism and commitment to the rule of law.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, extended his deepest condolences to the Hassan family, the government of Kano State, and the people of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa constituency.

The late lawmaker was buried on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites. He is the latest member of the 10th Assembly to pass away since its inauguration in June 2023.
