Nigerian Youth Converge to Map the Future of the National Youth Policy

A cross-section of Nigeria’s youth convened at the inaugural LMI–NALTF Youth Dialogue Series to engage, interrogate, and help shape the outcomes of the National Youth Policy – a deliberate step toward institutionalising youth inclusion in governance and building a future that truly works for young people.

Convened by the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI), Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) and the National Assembly Library, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Nigerian Youth Parliament, and the Abuja Global Shapers, the dialogue brought together key stakeholders from government, the legislature, and youth platforms to advance practical, actionable strategies for the effective implementation of the National Youth Policy.

Stakeholders in attendance included: Solape Sonuga, Director, Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI) & Deputy Chief of Staff, Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL); Amb. Dapo Oyewole, Secretary General, Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL); Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, Executive Secretary, National Assembly Library; Rt. Hon. Aliyu Idris Zakari, Speaker, Nigerian Youth Parliament; Stella Ukeje, Assistant Chief Youth Development Officer, Ministry of Youth Development; and Mohammed Funsho Abdullahi, Chief of Staff to the Honourable Minister for Youth Development.

The 2019-2023 National Youth Policy is currently being reviewed under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to reflect the evolving priorities and realities of young Nigerians. Nationwide zonal consultations have been conducted and the review process is now approaching its final stage. The National Youth Policy impacts over 60 million young Nigerians, making it a critical tool for inclusive growth, national development and long-term stability.

The LMI-NALTF Youth Dialogue Series will produce an outcome document to help shape practical implementation pathways for the revised policy. The updated policy is being structured around key thematic priorities to drive sustainable youth development. Learn more here.
