On July 9, 2026, in a targeted effort to elevate the standards of Nigeria’s education system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially transmitted the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to the Senate for legislative consideration and passage.
The executive communication was formally presented to lawmakers during Thursday’s plenary session, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the President’s letter aloud to the chamber.
According to the official communication, the proposed legislation is designed to reform and strengthen the administration, regulatory oversight, and governance of public senior secondary schools across the Federation.
The bill is a product of extensive cross-agency collaboration, having been thoroughly vetted and finalized by the Federal Ministry of Justice to ensure strict alignment with national drafting standards and constitutional provisions.
President Tinubu emphasized that the amendment is a critical pillar of his administration’s broader agenda to fortify Nigerian educational institutions for the collective national interest.
“In consequence of the above, the desire of this administration to strengthen the educational institutions in the national interest, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill, 2026, is forwarded for legislative action by the National Assembly,” the President’s letter stated.
Underscoring the critical nature of the reforms, President Tinubu urged the Red Chamber to give the proposed legislation swift and thorough deliberation, expressing his hope for an “expeditious passage.”
Following the formal reading of the executive request, Senate President Godswill Akpabio promptly referred the amendment bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business.
Reflecting the urgency requested by the executive, the committee has been mandated to review the bill and report back to the full chamber within one week for further legislative progression.
