The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund has commended the management of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura (FUTD), for laying a solid foundation and maintaining exceptional project quality barely three years after the institution’s establishment.
Led by Chairman Senator Muhammad Muntari Dandutse (Funtua Senatorial District), the delegation conducted an oversight inspection of ongoing Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) projects at the university’s permanent site on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The visit also served to sensitize students on the benefits and proper utilization of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).
Welcoming the delegation, Pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, highlighted the rapid growth of the university since its establishment in 2023. Prof. Katsayal noted that the institution already houses 300-level students, with its pioneer set expected to graduate next year to support Nigeria’s expanding railway and transportation sectors.
While presenting FUTD’s NELFund performance report, the Vice-Chancellor appealed to the National Assembly for increased interventions:
“As Nigeria’s premier specialized transportation university, FUTD requires expanded infrastructure and dedicated support to fulfill its mandate of building national human capacity in the transport sector.”
Responding, Senator Dandutse lauded the VC’s leadership and reassured the university of the Senate’s commitment to ensuring value for money and delivering infrastructure that supports academic expansion. Senator Dandutse also revealed that the Senate Committee is actively working on a proposal to increase the monthly student upkeep allowance under NELFund beyond the current ₦20,000 threshold.
Following a physical inspection of ongoing project sites, where lawmakers praised the standard of construction, the delegation accompanied by Prof. Katsayal paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness Alhaji Umar Faruk Umar, CON, at his palace.
Receiving the Senators, the Emir of Daura reaffirmed the Emirate’s trust in Prof. Katsayal’s integrity and praised the rapid development of the university under his leadership. The monarch emphasized education as the primary tool to combat insecurity, drug abuse, and other social vices, urging lawmakers to lead with the fear of God and calling for continued synergy between traditional institutions and all arms of government.
