Senate Plenary Highlights for Tuesday, May 5, 2026

The senate during Tuesday’s Plenary Session, presented three bills which were all passed for first reading which were all sponsored by The Senate Leader, Senator Bmidele Micheal Opeyemi.

These bills are:

Factoring, Assignments and Receivables Financing Bill, 2026 (HB. 516)

Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (Registration, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 1009)

Dental Therapists (Registration, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 1010).

Furthermore, during plenary, the senate while discussing matters of urgent public concern showed its anger and displeasure on the xenophobic attacks Nigerians are facing in South Africa which took centre stage.

The senate recieved ministerial nominees for confirmation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially requested the Senate to screen and confirm the nominations of Joseph Tegbe and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Ministers of the Federal Republic, alongside the appointment of Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Lastly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read letter’s during plenary concerning notice of defection from three senator’s switching their parties to NDC (Nigeria Democratic Congress) and LP (Labour Party).
