Senate President Akpabio Urges African Self-Reliance in Defence

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has delivered a bold charge to African leaders, urging the continent to end its reliance on foreign defence equipment and focus instead on building self-reliant security infrastructure, local manufacturing capabilities, and advanced technological expertise.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the opening ceremony of the Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026 in Lagos, Senator Akpabio delivered the President’s address, outlining a transformative vision for the future of Africa’s defence and security cooperation.

Senator Akpabio emphasized that true national and continental progress will not be measured by the volume of military hardware acquired, but by the sustainable capabilities Africa develops internally. He urged that future international defence partnerships must deliver tangible long-term value through technology transfer, local industrial manufacturing, specialized training, and the nurturing of indigenous African expertise.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s ongoing battles against complex security challenges, ranging from terrorism and insurgency to maritime crime and cyber threats, the Senate President highlighted the devastating toll of insecurity and called for urgent, unified action. He stressed that overcoming these modern threats demands robust regional cooperation, sustained financial investment, and a firm collective commitment to peace.

Paying tribute to the Armed Forces, Senator Akpabio honored the brave men and women in uniform, particularly those who have paid the supreme price in defence of the nation. He noted that their sacrifices place a profound moral obligation on African leadership to ensure that military personnel are equipped with the modern tools, specialized training and institutional support required to effectively carry out their duties.

Looking toward the future, the Senate President highlighted the strategic role of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and advanced defence systems. He urged leaders across the continent to actively engage Africa’s vibrant youth, creating pathways for young innovators to contribute directly to technological advancement and national security.

Expressing unyielding confidence in the continent’s potential, Senator Akpabio stated that Africa possesses the talent, resources and determination required to take full responsibility for its security and destiny.

He concluded by reaffirming that a secure Africa remains the indispensable foundation for a prosperous continent, calling on leaders to translate international security partnerships into practical, local capabilities that protect citizens and foster long-term peace for future generations.
