House of Reps Advances Bill for Additional Plateau State LGAs

Wednesday, November 12, 2025 | In a significant move toward deepening grassroots development and strengthening political representation, a bill proposing the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Plateau State has scaled second reading. Sponsored by Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, the initiative is rooted in the belief that increasing the number of LGAs will address longstanding challenges of accessibility, equity, and economic advancement across the State.

Key Justifications for the Bill:

  1. Bringing Government Closer to the People
The proposed bill aims to decentralize governance by creating smaller and more manageable LGAs. This will ensure that essential services such as primary healthcare, basic education, and rural infrastructure reach remote and underserved communities with greater efficiency. By establishing new administrative headquarters nearer to the people, the State anticipates a boost in grassroots development and a faster response to local needs.
  2. Equity, Fairness, and Enhanced Political Representation
The creation of new LGAs is expected to address perceived imbalances and marginalization among certain ethnic groups and communities within Plateau State. By granting greater self-determination and political participation to these communities, the bill aims to foster a sense of inclusion and unity. Additionally, increased LGAs will translate into more political offices and potentially influence the number of State and Federal constituencies, enhancing the political voice of the State on the national stage.
  3. Economic Viability and Revenue Generation
The bill recognizes the economic potential embedded in various regions of Plateau State. With new LGAs, the State stands to benefit from an increased share of federal allocations distributed according to the number of constitutionally recognized LGAs. Moreover, the dedicated administration in new LGAs will be better positioned to harness local resources, manage emerging markets, and facilitate agricultural and mineral development for sustainable economic growth.
