The Senate has rescinded the amendment that barred first time senators from contesting presiding offices, reopening the 2027 race for Senate President and Deputy Senate President.
The reversal was adopted on Thursday, during plenary session through a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and presided over by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau.









In addition, four bills were presented. These include:
National Teachers Institute Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 879) sponsored by Sen. Bamidele, Michael Opeyemi (Ekiti Central-Senate Leader) which passed first reading.
Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 1035) sponsored by Sen. Simon, Bako Lalong (Plateau South) which passed second reading.
Federal Medical Centres Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 sponsored by Sen. Banigo, Ipalibo Harry (Rivers West) which passed Presentation and Consideration of Reports.
FCT Appropriation Bill, 2026 (SB. 1020) sponsored by Sen. Mohammed, Bomai Ibrahim (Yobe South) which passed Presentation and Consideration of Reports.
Furthermore, Senator Ibrahim Mustapha, the lawmaker representing the Kaduna North Senatorial District, has officially resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lastly, senate adjourned plenary to June 2, 2026.
