Deputy Speaker Kalu Advocates for Global Climate Financing at GLOBE Parliamentary Reception

At the GLOBE Legislators Parliamentary Reception held at the House of Commons in London, the Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, emphasized the urgent need to strengthen parliamentary leadership to advance global climate action.

Speaking as GLOBE International celebrated its 35th anniversary and inaugurated Nigeria’s Hon. Sam Onuigbo as its new President, the Deputy Speaker highlighted the necessity of dedicated budgetary allocations for climate initiatives, particularly across the Global South. He underscored that global climate ambition must be matched by sustainable and actionable financing.

According to the Deputy Speaker, legislatures bear a critical responsibility to translate international climate commitments into enforceable laws, credible budgets, transparent institutions, and measurable outcomes. For developing nations, he maintained that climate action represents more than an environmental imperative; it is a vital pathway to economic growth, energy security, job creation, and sustainable development. He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian National Assembly to supporting and leading these essential climate conversations.

The Deputy Speaker also extended his congratulations to Hon. Sam Onuigbo on his historic appointment as the first Nigerian and second African to lead GLOBE International. He noted that by sponsoring Nigeria’s landmark Climate Change Act, 2021, Hon. Onuigbo provided the foundational legal framework for a more coordinated and climate-resilient future for the country. The Deputy Speaker expressed confidence that under Hon. Onuigbo’s leadership, the organization would significantly deepen its global influence, foster parliamentary cooperation, and advance practical, inclusive climate solutions across continents.
