House of Reps Pays Tribute to Late ARISE News Reporter, Somtochukwu Maduagwu

The House of Representatives on Tuesday, paid tribute to the late Ms Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie, a promising Nigerian journalist whose life was tragically cut short following a robbery incident at her Katampe residence in Abuja on September 29, 2025.

The tribute, issued on behalf of the House by its Spokesman and Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi, Jr., was formally read to plenary by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, who presided over the sitting at the resumption of plenary.

“At 29, she distinguished herself as a lawyer, journalist, and advocate for gender equality and the welfare of out-of-school children, reflecting the best of a new generation devoted to service and excellence.

“This Honourable House formally records its collective tribute to Miss Maduagwu, whose work deepened public understanding of governance and embodied integrity and civic responsibility. Her advocacy for the Reserved Seats Bill to enhance women’s representation, and her voluntary contributions to parliamentary initiatives promoting transparency and citizen engagement, demonstrated her commitment to national development,” the tribute read.

“The Honourable House extends heartfelt condolences to the family of Ms Maduagwu, her loved ones, ARISE News, and the wider media community,” it added.

The House further called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her death and observed a moment of silence in her honour, recognising her integrity, civic responsibility, and service to the nation.
