House Ad-Hoc Committee Probes Decades of Port Concessions

The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Port Terminals and Related Activities has officially commenced a high-level investigation into the performance of concessionaires operating across Nigeria’s maritime and aviation sectors.

The probe, which covers a nineteen-year period from 2006 to 2025, seeks to evaluate the efficiency and compliance of private operators managing critical national infrastructure.

Among the prominent lawmakers driving the exercise is Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, who joined her colleagues as the committee began its oversight functions. The inquiry is focused on determining whether the original objectives of these concessions are being met in alignment with national economic expectations.

During the initial sessions, the committee engaged with various stakeholders to discuss strategic steps toward improving transparency. Hon. Ogbara emphasized that the investigation is a necessary mechanism to ensure that all parties—both government and private—are operating strictly within the bounds of their legal agreements.

  • Ensuring that infrastructure remains in peak condition and under proper oversight.
  • Verifying that concessionaires have fulfilled their financial and operational obligations to the Federal Government.
  • Creating a stable and transparent environment that encourages long-term investment in Nigeria’s transport sectors.

Speaking on her involvement in the committee, Hon. Ogbara reiterated her dedication to ensuring that Nigeria’s systems are not just operational on paper, but truly beneficial to the public. She noted that the exercise is designed to deliver long-term value to the Nigerian people by fostering growth and national prosperity.

“It is another avenue to reaffirm a deep commitment to working with systems that are functional and beneficial to our nation’s growth,” a statement reflecting her position noted, highlighting her role as a representative focused on accountability.

The Ad-Hoc Committee is expected to continue its engagement with terminal operators, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) as it compiles its findings for the House.
