On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the House of Representatives engaged in a crucial second reading of a bill aimed at amending the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The proposed amendment seeks to facilitate the establishment of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State. The bill is sponsored by Hon. David Agada Ogewu.
In his presentation, Rep. Ogewu emphasized that the amendment would significantly enhance grassroots governance by bringing government functions closer to the citizens. He highlighted the challenges facing Benue, which includes a vast landmass and an increasing population, asserting the need for more local councils to ensure equitable development and effective administration.
The motion received strong support from Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar, who represents the Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency. Ogar described the initiative as a vital step toward deepening democracy and bolstering service delivery in rural areas.
Expressing optimism about the bill’s prospects, Rep. Ogewu noted that if passed into law, it would enable the creation of additional LGAs, particularly within his constituency. He referenced previous unsuccessful attempts by Senator George Akume, who, as Governor of Benue State at the end of his second term in 2007, had sought to create more local government areas to improve administrative efficiency.
The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review, where it will undergo further legislative examination.
