The National Assembly Library, on Thursday, hosted the third edition of its monthly Research Symposium bringing together scholars, policy experts, and institutional stakeholders for insightful discussions centered on the critical intersection of modern technology, ethical frameworks, and legislative knowledge infrastructure.
Organized as part of the library’s continuous capacity-building and modernization drive, this month’s edition featured deep-dive presentations spanning two vital thematic pillars: ‘Science, Innovation and Technology Transformation’ and ‘Parliamentary Policy and Ethics’.
The AI Revolution in Parliament
Digital Transformation in Legislative Institutions in Nigeria: The Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Parliamentary Efficiency
The first session plunged directly into the future of governance, exploring how legislative libraries and research departments can leverage generative AI to overcome historical deficits in data access and document curation. The presenter argued that integrating AI tools can revolutionize legislative drafting, automate the summarization of massive public hearing transcripts, and provide real-time policy analysis.
Accountability and the Gavel
A Desk Study of the Limits and Impact of the Legislative Code of Conduct in Guiding the Actions of Lawmakers in the National Assembly
Shifting from technological innovation to institutional integrity, the second presentation provided a rigorous, evidence-based critique of parliamentary ethics enforcement mechanisms. Through an extensive desk study, the paper examined how effectively the existing Legislative Code of Conduct acts as a deterrent against ethical breaches.
