National Assembly Takes Steps Towards Environmental Stewardship and Tree Protection

On Tuesday 28th October 2025, Hon. Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi presented a motion to advance climate action and promote green initiatives. The National Assembly has resolved to implement a series of measures aimed at enhancing environmental stewardship within its precincts. This initiative aligns with the ongoing advocacy of the Honourable Speaker for sustainable practices and the protection of the ecosystem.

One of the key resolutions mandates the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA) to establish a Tree Replacement Policy. This policy requires that for every tree that is cut down within the assembly grounds, at least three indigenous trees must be planted in designated areas nearby. This effort is geared towards maintaining and enhancing the green landscape of the National Assembly complex.

Additionally, the National Assembly Management, in cooperation with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), will develop and enforce a Green Infrastructure Development Framework. This framework aims to incorporate tree preservation, landscaping, and ecological protection into all future construction projects in the Three Arms Zone, ensuring that environmental considerations are woven into the very fabric of urban development.

To further bolster these efforts, the Committees on Environment and Habitat, along with those on the FCT, are tasked with collaborating with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and various environmental agencies. They will conduct a comprehensive audit of green spaces that have been lost due to recent construction and agricultural activities. In conjunction with this audit, a Legislative Green Task Force will be established to oversee and promote environmental sustainability initiatives within the National Assembly premises.

Strong condemnation has also been voiced regarding the indiscriminate felling of trees and the destruction of green areas within the National Assembly and the surrounding Three Arms Zone. This collective movement underscores the National Assembly’s commitment to safeguarding the environment while serving as a model for sustainable practices in governance.
