Senate Plenary Highlights for July 22, 2026

The Senate during it’s plenary session on Wednesday, received and considered the report of the Committee on Legislative Compliance on the status of compliance with Senate resolutions from July 2023 to December 2025.

The report, presented by Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, provided an update on the level of implementation of various Senate resolutions across government agencies.

Senate Passes Foreign Aid Management Bill for Second Reading

In the course of legislative business, the Senate debated the general principles of A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Coordination, Transparency, Accountability, Registration, Disclosure and Effective Management of Foreign Assistance, Grants, Donations, Humanitarian Support and Concessional Financing in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for Related Matters, 2026 (SB. 1034), by Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo. The bill scaled second reading after extensive deliberation.

Furthermore, Senator Barau Jibrin added to the debate by commending the bill’s sponsor and emphasizing that the enduring discussion on donor funds demands the urgent action addressed by the bill.

This bill is necessary to establish a clear legal framework and enforcement mechanism to stop abuse and protect genuine development assistance.

Senate Pays Tribute To Late Senator Anthony Adeniyi

The Senate also observed a one minute silence in honour of late Senator Tonny Adeniya, who passed away in May this year. Senator Tonny Adeniyi was a Senator who represented Ekiti South in the 8th Senate.

He was a very active member in various committees, particularly the Constitutional Committee, where he brought his professional background to bear in the work he did as a member of that committee. We pray for him and pray that his immediate family will have the fortitude to bear the loss.
