Senate sets up panel to review House bills

On Thursday, the Senate stepped down consideration of the Chartered Institute of Training and Development of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2026, following stringent debates among lawmakers over its relevance and potential overlap with existing institutions. Following the debate, Sen. Akpabio announced the constitution of a sub-committee to be chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi to ensure that bills transmitted from the House of Representatives for concurrence are thoroughly scrutinised before being considered by the Senate.

Bills of the Day

Three bills were presented for first reading:

  • Public Complaints Commission Act (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 1040); Sen. Imasuen, Neda Bernards (Edo South) – First Reading
  • Official Secrets Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 1041); Sen. Adebule, Idiat Oluranti (Lagos West) – First Reading
  • Investment Protection and Investor Righst Bill, 2026 (SB. 1042); Sen. Asuquo, Ekpenyong (Cross River South) – First Reading

Presentation & Consideration of Reports

Senator Neda Imasuen, Chairman Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions

The Senate considered and adopted two reports of the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions and subsequently upheld the petition from Mr Kingsley Nwanji against the Energy Commission of Nigeria over his wrongful suspension from service by the Commission in May 2015 and directed the Commission to adequately compensate the petitioner.

Also upheld was the petition from Samuel Uwaeme Esq, on behalf of Messrs Sampson and two others against the Nigeria Police Force, (NPF) over alleged lawlessness, impunity and illegal occupation of the land of his clients at Circular Road, Presidential Housing Estate in port-Harcourt, Rivers State. A resolution was passed, urging the NPF to vacate the land for the petitioners.

Confirmation of Appointments

The Senate received a request from the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confirmation of the nomination of Dr. Zainab Maruwa, as a representative of the North East on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The request was referred to a relevant committee to screen the nominee and revert to plenary. Read more here.
