The House of Representatives, at its plenary on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, deliberated on a wide range of legislative proposals and committee reports aimed at strengthening governance, enhancing national security, promoting economic growth and improving public service delivery.
The legislative agenda featured the presentation of five bills for First Reading which include the North-West Development Commission (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 2789) sponsored by Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the National Agro-Industrial Development Authority (Establishment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 2787) by Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 2783) by Hon. Najimdeen Oyeshina Oyedeji, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 (HB. 2786) by Hon. Abullahi Mamudu and the Chartered Compliance Institute of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 2788) by Hon. Daniel Asama.
The House also received reports from several standing committees, including those on Customs and Excise, Digital and Electronic Banking, Banking, Regulations, Science and Technology, Communications and Capital Market and Institutions, Committee on Health Institutions, and Infectious Diseases. These reports cover the 2026 Nigeria Customs Service budget proposal, the establishment of the Nigerian Fintech Regulatory Commission, the proposed Federal Medical Centre in Monguno, Borno State, measures against tuberculosis-based discrimination, and an investigative report on Global Fund grants for HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria programmes.
During the Orders of the Day, lawmakers considered several bills at Third and Second Readings.
The six Third Reading Bills include: Merchant Shipping Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill (HB. 1592), Climate Resilient Commerce Bill (HB. 2206), Chartered Institute for Entrepreneurship Consultants Bill (HB. 1626), Chartered Institute of Mortgage Bankers and Brokers of Nigeria (CIMBBN) Bill (HB. 899), Pensions Reform Act Bill (HB. 2726) and Chartered Institute of Financial and Investment Analysts of Nigeria Bill (HB. 336)
The Second Reading Bills include: General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology Bill (HB. 2785) by Hon. Abbas Tajudeen and Hon. Bello Isah Ambrura, Commission for the Implementation and Enforcement of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) Bill (HB. 2765) by Hon. Ahmed Munir, the Pension Reform Act Bill, 2014(HB.2726) by Hon. Jallo Hussaini Mohammed and the National Food Reserve Agency Bill(HB. 48) by Hon.Pascal Agbodike.
The House also debated four critical motions on pressing national issues. These include: Executive Action to Halt the Ransom Cash Economy, Strengthen Financial Intelligence Coordination, and Enforce Compliance with Anti–Money Laundering Frameworks in Nigeria sponsored by Hon. Ademorin Ali Kuye, National Safe Schools Protection and Rapid Response Framework sponsored by Hon. Olusoji Abidemi Adetunji, the Construction of a Modern Agricultural Produce Storage Facility in Agyaragu, Nasarawa State sponsored by Hon. Abubakar Sarki Dahiru, and the Revival of the Ohimini/Otukpo Airstrip in Benue State sponsored by Hon. Onuh Onyeche Blessing.
In addition, Members considered Reports from the Committee on Customs and Excise and others.
